Our environmental policy

Environmental issues are important to us!

Umeå Folkets Hus should, through increased knowledge and awareness, improve resource conservation and develop solutions that are sustainable in the long term. The idea of ecosystems and the four system conditions should guide our efforts for an ever-improving environment. Through environmental work, Umeå Folkets Hus takes the responsibility to strive to reach a more ecological and sustainable society.

1. 1. In a sustainable society, nature is not subjected to a systematic concentration increase of substances from the bedrock. This means that we have to redirect our operations and drastically reduce our consumption of oil, metals and minerals. 2. 2. In a sustainable society, nature is not subjected to a systematic concentration increase of substances from society’s productions. This means that we must not spread substances such as hard-to-decompose pesticides into nature. These artificial substances cannot be broken down natually and they poison water, ground and animals. Emissions of natural but harmful substances, such as nitrogen oxides, must be reduced sharply. 3. 3. In a sustainable society, nature is not subjected to systematic displacement through over-take or manipulation. This means, for example, that we must not indiscriminately cut down forests or build roads and cities on fertile farmland, because trees and plants are a necessary part of the ecosystem. 4. In a sustainable society, the management of resources is so effective and fair that human needs are met everywhere. This means that we must distribute the earth’s resources fairly so that the entire world population can live well. We must stop wasting energy and materials. We also need to recycle products and recover materials from end-of-life products.

We compensate for the climate together

As a part of our work in creating an environmentally friendly meeting venue we do climate compensation for each of our whole-day guests. Climate compensating a guest at Umeå Folkets Hus costs 2kr/day per person (according to the estimates by sustainability consultants at Esam). When you book a whole-day conference with us you are paying a 1kr per person fee and we do the same which doubles the effect of your environment compensation. Welcome to book your conference with us. Swan Ecolabelled Conferences

We are delighted to be able to say that in addition to our restaurants that have been Swan-ecolabelled since 2008, our entire facility is certified Swan-ecolabelled. As one of five facilities in the country, we are proud to offer a more environmentally friendly alternative for those who book their conferences or dinners with us. We want to be able to offer an environmentally friendly alternative to confer and work continuously to review and improve our environmental policy to become even greener and even more climate-smart.
